I wrote this poem of support for my son, who was at school in the UK and about to sit his A levels. |
A TRIBUTE TO QUEEN - (The Tribute Band)
A review of the poolside concert with a Queen Tribute band. |
TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF THE DUBAI COUNTRY CLUB - 1995
David Roberts, a former British Ambassador to the UAE, once observed that “it is an admirable trait of the British to set up ‘clubs and societies’ wherever they go”. Twenty-five years ago, six Europeans and one Arab – Khalifa bin Juma Al Naboodah - became the early inspiration and motivators for the Dubai Country Club, with their names featuring on the original decree. |
VODKA AND HONEY
Noticing the fascination that my rescued kitten, Smirnoff, had for the bee activity in the Yucca flowers outside a window, I wrote him the story of the life of those bees ... and how lucky he was to be loved and pampered, with the prospect of a long, healthy life. |
THE CAMEL - NATURE'S ANSWER TO THE 4 X 4
All about the wonderful Bactrian Camel and the Dromedary Camel and their lives in the desert. These camels are the accepted, popular and uncontested monarch of the desert, with indisputable copyright on pride, arrogance, affectation and haughtiness which he exhibits in his droll, comic carriage. |
TWO COMICAL DESERT MAMMALS
The Expat and The Camel ... |
THE HARE AND THE RABBIT
The Fast and The Fragile - a review of these two beautiful creatures. |
ANTHROPOMORPHISM - AND WHY NOT?
Anthropomorphism carries many important implications. For example, thinking of a non-human entity in human ways, rendering it worthy of moral care and consideration. It is interesting that we do not assign human qualities to every object we encounter. We do so when we recognise similar physical traits to ourselves – facial features probably being the most important, then perhaps human-like movements. |
A CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER WITH A DOUBLE TWIST
How to organise visit to Father Christmas and raise funds at the same time. It is basically about coming to see Father Christmas and give him a present (ultimately for local Charities). Father Christmas will also give the children a small gift - but gifts donated to him prior to the occasion.
How to organise visit to Father Christmas and raise funds at the same time. It is basically about coming to see Father Christmas and give him a present (ultimately for local Charities). Father Christmas will also give the children a small gift - but gifts donated to him prior to the occasion.
- The first twist is that the children bring him a gift - food, clothing, toys, books and crayons or blankets.
- The second twist is that at the event, there would also be stalls, each stall selling raffle tickets for their products only - allowing the purchaser of the ticket to decide what they might like to have from that particular stall/stalls. The prize draw taken from each stall's collection, would be at the end of the event. A very popular occasion, especially with a photographer present.
THE ALTERNATIVE CLUB
A letter I wrote to Gulf News in Dubai, following an 'undercover' visit to film the life and time of the British expatriate. |
A GLIMPSE OF AFRICA
Africa accounts for a quarter of the land surface of the earth ... and a rapidly increasing percentage of the population. Most of the African land mass is still hostile to man ... barren, arid deserts advance relentlessly towards oppressively humid equatorial forests. |
SO ... THIS IS AFRICA
A letter home as a new Expat! |
