Introduction
Educated and trained in the UK (with one year at College in Paris), I would holiday overseas wherever my parents were stationed, and latterly I became an overseas resident with my husband. Exciting places included:
Brazil - Dubai - France - Italy - Kenya - Nigeria - Pakistan
Brazil - Dubai - France - Italy - Kenya - Nigeria - Pakistan
As an adult expatriate, latterly living in Dubai and Kenya, I was able to enjoy the availability of volunteering. This granted me invaluable knowledge of the country I was living in, with the ability to offer help to people, organisations and animals in need; worthwhile causes and the community. It helped me to make new friends, and give me a sense of purpose, meaning, direction and fulfilment.
Whilst working as a volunteer, I had opportunities to write articles; produce newsletters; as well as to initiate, design and to produce projects. My favourite was creating entertainment events for children ... Hallowe'en, Easter and Christmas parties. Dubai, particularly, was not the advanced country as we know it today - so imagination, resourcefulness and teamwork were called upon.
In Dubai, the children knew me as 'The Chief Witch of Dubai and Sharjah Coven', and each year - at Hallowe'en - I would attend schools and events dressed up as a 'friendly' witch with bizarre makeup and traditional dress. It was such fun to then take my son to the local burger place in Sharjah, virtually stopping the astonished traffic. My son is still embarrassed of my adventures to this day!
In Kenya, there was much to do and it was a pleasure to do so in such a beautiful and stunning country. I am still supporting some of the charities to this day.
On our return to the UK, I volunteered within the local health sector, and then gradually inched into the paid-work market. I am still volunteering.
